Making the Most of Your Small Space

Before I buy something new for myself I ask myself these two questions:

1) Where am I going to store this?
2) Will I miss it if I leave it behind?

The answer is usually, I don’t know where I’m going to store it and no, I’m not going to regret my decision of leaving it behind. I have learned that just because it’s on sale does not mean that I actually need it. Since we’re only renting right now and we have no idea where we’ll be in a few years or even next year I think it’s best right now that we don’t accumulate too much because that’s only more to move.  What can I say, I’m a practical gal.

When we moved into our apartment almost two years ago my “connoisseur” husband insisted we get a nice piece of furniture to store our very few bottles of wine. We already have a massive Expedit unit and a Billy bookcase from IKEA so we surely didn’t need another piece of storage. In a small space it’s better that everything serves multiple purposes rather than having a different piece of furniture for each function. And just because you have a bare wall that does not mean you have to fill it. Negative space is kinda nice people.

That’s when I discovered this little cubby in our sidetable. Perfecto!

It only holds about five or six bottles at a time but that is plenty enough for us.

This isn’t exactly a thrift store find but I did snag it from my grandparents house when my Oma moved from her 2500 sq. foot home into a 1200 sq. foot condo. I think one of my uncle’s built this back in their high school days about 40 years ago. I freshened it up with two coats of Benjamin Moore paint in Ultra White and it’s like brand new.

What does your furniture double-up as? Who else lives in a small condo with space issues?

I agree that making the most of a small space with a wine rack is great. It is definitely something that I would recommend as it is a great place to store wine will keeping the space that it takes up to a minimum.
